Looking for a job? Highlight your ability, not your experience by Jason Shen

Jason Shen shares some new thinking on how the hiring systems that was built around 20th century are failing and causing us to miss out people with incredible potential. He proposes how job seekers can make themselves more attractive and why employers should look for ability over credentials.

He begins with a study that was conducted back in 2010 that exposes – only a quarter of college graduates work in a field that relates to their degree. Shares his own success story  who was turned down by top firms has cracked through Etsy.

Strategies to identify tomorrow’s high performers:

  1. Expand the search
    • When looked for the talent in the same place, we get same results.
  2. Hire for performance
    • Employer needs to make candidates demonstrate their skills before they are hired.
    • Candidate needs to seek out ways to showcase their unique skills and abilities.
  3. Get the bigger picture
    • Without getting a holistic view, judging someone will be flawed.

He concludes as, We could live in a world where people are seen for what they’re truly capable of and have the opportunity to realize their full potential. So let’s go out and build it.”
